The Facts
Improving the Access and Quality of Care
Our Committee

The Facts:

  • The advances in diagnosis and treatment of eye disease have resulted in the limitation of curriculum in the schools and colleges of optometry and ophthalmology in the area of specialty contact lenses.  A small number of cornea and contact lens residency trained practitioners matriculate each year and a significant percentage return to faculty positions or are employed in industry; hence, only a few who have training in specialty lenses are added to the practitioner base serving the general public.
  • The first time fit success rate is relatively low for specialty contact lenses.  As a result, the excessive chair time causes fees to be high which in turn limits the demand for specialty lens solutions.  End consumer fees are also higher as a function of the high exchange and return rate which causes manufacturers to raise individual lens cost to cover the manufacturing cost of exchanged and return lenses.
  • Widespread use of commodity lenses has caused contact lens service fees to drop as a function of purchasing power of the dollar; therefore, practitioners must leverage evaluation and case management through use of technology driven prescribing and delegation of information gathering and case management to ancillary personnel.
  • Ancillary personnel need access to the training that will equip them to support their practitioners in specialty contact lens prescribing and case management.
  • Major CE events have general programs with an emphasis on primary care; as a result, specialty contact lens courses are few in number and generally not focused on the step by step methods of prescribing and case management
  • The last decade was an era of material science development and advancement in low cost cast molding.  This decade is forecast to be an era of advancement in mass customization and lens design.

Filling the critical need for education and training of specialty contact lens prescribing and case management.

Objectives to Improve the Access and Quality of Care

  • Increase the availability of specialty contact lens services for the public.

  • Expand the competency and capacity of the individual practitioner to offer specialty contact lens services and materials.

  • Increase the first fit success rate of practitioners prescribing specialty contact lenses.

  • Reduce the professional chair time of practitioners providing specialty contact lenses.

  • Increase the comfortable wearing time, visual performance and eye health of patients with specialty contact lenses.

We do all of this with the best specialty contact lens faculty who present a step by step "How To” curriculum and supporting hands-on workshops designed to help you return to your practice with confidence in your competency to deliver a new level of care for your patients.
